You hit Print and the page comes out with everything except black text. Color images print fine, but black letters are missing or faded. This is one of the most common printer problems, and the good news is that almost every cause has a free fix you can do at home in under 15 minutes.

Why Is My Printer Not Printing Black?

Before diving into fixes, it helps to understand the root cause. Printers use black ink for text, grayscale documents, and mixed color output. When black stops flowing, the issue usually falls into one of these categories:

  • Clogged black nozzle — Ink dries inside the tiny print-head holes and blocks flow.
  • Empty or low black cartridge — The cartridge reads as full but the ink well is actually dry.
  • Air bubbles in the ink line — Common after replacing a cartridge or if the printer sat unused for weeks.
  • Wrong paper type setting — Some modes skip black ink to prevent bleed on glossy paper.
  • Damaged or expired cartridge — Third-party or old cartridges can fail without warning.
  • Printer driver corruption — Software telling the printer to use composite black (color mix) instead of true black.
  • Protective tape still on — New cartridges have a vent seal that is easy to miss.
  • Print-head alignment off — Black nozzles land in the wrong spot, making output look blank.

Fix 1: Run the Built-In Nozzle Check and Clean Cycle

Every inkjet printer from HP, Canon, Epson, and Brother has a self-cleaning function. This is always the first thing to try.

HP Printers

  1. Open the HP Smart app or go to Settings > Printer Maintenance on the printer screen.
  2. Select Clean Printheads or Clean Cartridges.
  3. Run the cleaning cycle (it takes 2–3 minutes and uses some ink).
  4. Print a nozzle check page from the same menu.
  5. If black lines are still broken or missing, run Deep Cleaning (sometimes called Level 2 Cleaning).

Canon Printers

  1. Press and hold the Resume/Stop button until the power lamp flashes twice, then release.
  2. Or use the Canon IJ Printer Utility on your computer: Maintenance > Cleaning.
  3. Print a nozzle check pattern afterward to confirm black is flowing.

Epson Printers

  1. On the printer panel, go to Setup > Maintenance > Head Cleaning.
  2. After cleaning, run Nozzle Check from the same menu.
  3. Epson printers often need 2–3 cleaning cycles if the printer has been idle for a long time.

Warning: Each cleaning cycle uses a noticeable amount of ink. Do not run more than 3 deep cleanings in a row. If the nozzle check still shows gaps, switch to Fix 2 (manual cleaning) instead of wasting more ink.

Fix 2: Clean the Print Head Manually (Deep Clean)

If automatic cleaning fails, dried ink is likely hardened inside the print head. A manual clean breaks down that dried ink.

  1. Remove the black cartridge and set it on a paper towel, nozzle-side down.
  2. Remove the print head (on Canon and some HP models) or leave it in place if fixed (Epson).
  3. Moisten a lint-free cloth or coffee filter with warm distilled water or a 50/50 mix of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol (90%+).
  4. Gently wipe the nozzle plate where ink comes out. Do not press hard — the nozzles are fragile.
  5. Let it sit for 10 minutes on the damp cloth to dissolve dried ink.
  6. Reinstall everything and run one automatic cleaning cycle to prime the lines.

Fix 3: Check the Black Cartridge Ink Level

Windows and macOS both show ink levels, but these readings are estimates based on page counts, not actual liquid measurements. A cartridge can read "half full" while being completely empty.

  • Physical check: Remove the cartridge and hold it up to a light. If the ink chamber looks hollow or you can see air gaps, it is empty.
  • Weight check: Compare the cartridge to a brand-new one. A significant weight difference means low ink.
  • Software check: Open the printer utility (HP Smart, Canon IJ, Epson Status Monitor, Brother iPrint&Scan) and look at the black ink bar.

If the cartridge is low, replace it. Do not mix old and new cartridges in the same color slot — it causes pressure imbalances.

Fix 4: Remove the Protective Tape or Vent Seal

New and refilled cartridges have a plastic tape or vent sticker covering the ink outlet or air vent. If you forget to remove it, no ink can flow.

  1. Remove the black cartridge from the printer.
  2. Look for a plastic strip across the copper contacts or nozzle area — pull it off completely.
  3. Look for a small vent sticker on the top or side of the cartridge — peel it off to let air in.
  4. Reinstall the cartridge and print a test page.

Fix 5: Reset the Printer and Clear the Spooler

Sometimes the printer software gets stuck and refuses to use the black cartridge even when everything is physically fine.

Full Printer Reset

  1. Turn the printer off and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Wait 60 seconds (this drains residual power from capacitors).
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on.
  4. Print a test page before sending any other jobs.

Clear the Print Spooler (Windows)

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler, right-click, and select Restart.
  3. If jobs are stuck, stop the spooler, open C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS, delete all files inside, then restart the spooler.

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Other Devices > Printers & Scanners (Windows) or System Settings > Printers (Mac).
