Brother printers are built for reliability and low running costs, but they are not immune to problems. Whether you have an inkjet MFC series or a laser HL or DCP model, Brother failures tend to follow predictable patterns: toner errors, paper jams in specific spots, drum-end-of-life messages, and wireless dropouts. This guide covers every common Brother issue with model-specific fixes.

Brother Printer Families Explained

Brother uses clear model prefixes. Knowing yours tells you which fixes apply:

  • HL-XXXX — Laser printer, single function (print only).
  • DCP-XXXX — Laser or inkjet, multi-function (print, copy, scan).
  • MFC-XXXX — Multi-function with fax.
  • Inkvestment (MFC-JXXXX, DCP-TXXXX) — Ink tank models with refillable tanks instead of cartridges.

Fix 1: "Replace Toner" or "Toner Ended" Error (Laser Models)

Brother laser printers estimate toner life with a page counter, not a physical sensor. The cartridge often has 20–30% toner left when the error appears. You can extend life or reset the counter.

Reset the Toner Counter

  1. Open the front cover (where you access the toner and drum).
  2. Press the Clear / Back button.
  3. Press *00 (star-zero-zero) on the keypad. Some models use *11 or 1 instead.
  4. The display should show "Accepted."
  5. Close the front cover.

If your model has a touchscreen, the menu path is usually Machine Info > Reset Menu > Toner.

Redistribute Toner

  1. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit.
  2. Gently rock it side to side 5–6 times.
  3. Reinstall and test.

Fix 2: "Replace Drum" or "Drum End Soon" Error

The drum unit images the page before toner is applied. Brother drums last approximately 12,000 pages. Like toner, the warning is based on a counter, not physical wear measurement.

Reset the Drum Counter

  1. Open the front cover.
  2. Press and hold the OK button for 2 seconds.
  3. Press * (star) on the keypad.
  4. Press 1 to reset the drum counter for the last used color, or press 0 for monochrome models.
  5. Close the front cover.

Warning: Only reset the drum counter if the print quality is still good. If you see repeating marks, gray backgrounds, or vertical lines, the drum is physically worn and must be replaced. Continuing to use a damaged drum wastes toner and damages the fuser.

Fix 3: Clean the Corona Wire

The corona wire applies an electrostatic charge to the drum so toner sticks. Dust accumulation weakens the charge and causes faint prints or blank pages.

  1. Open the front cover and remove the drum unit.
  2. Find the small green or blue tab on the drum unit.
  3. Slide the tab gently from one side to the other and back. Repeat 5 times.
  4. Make sure the tab returns to its original home position (there is usually an arrow indicating home).
  5. Reinstall the drum unit and close the cover.

Do this every time you replace toner, or whenever prints look faint.

Fix 4: Fix Paper Jams in Brother Printers

Brother lasers have specific jam-prone areas. Knowing where to look saves time:

Jam Location 1: Paper Tray (Error Jam Tray)

  1. Remove the paper tray completely.
  2. Check for curled or stuck paper at the back of the tray cavity.
  3. Clean the pickup roller with a slightly damp cloth.
  4. Fan the paper stack before reloading. Do not overfill.

Jam Location 2: Inside / Fuser (Error Jam Inside)

  1. Open the front cover and remove the drum/toner.
  2. Look inside for any scraps of paper.
  3. Open the rear cover (back of the printer). The fuser area is visible. Gently pull out any stuck paper. The fuser is hot — wait 10 minutes if the printer was recently used.

Jam Location 3: Duplex Unit (Error Jam Duplex)

  1. Remove the duplex unit from the back or bottom of the printer.
  2. Clear any paper or debris.
  3. Reinsert the duplex unit firmly.

Fix 5: Fix Faint or Light Prints

If your Brother laser prints look gray instead of black:

  1. Remove the toner and redistribute it (Fix 1).
  2. Clean the corona wire (Fix 3).
  3. Check the Toner Save mode in the driver. If it is on, turn it off: Printing Preferences > Advanced > Toner Save = Off.
  4. Check print density: Printing Preferences > Advanced > Density. Increase to +1 or +2.
  5. If prints are still faint after all of the above, the transfer roller or drum is worn. Replace the drum unit first.

Fix 6: Fix Smudged or Smearing Prints

Smudging on a laser printer usually means the toner is not fusing to the paper properly.

  • Wrong paper type: Using thick cardstock or glossy paper in a standard laser without changing the paper type setting causes the fuser to run at the wrong temperature.
  • Fuser wearing out: The fuser rollers lose their non-stick coating over time. Toner sticks to the rollers and transfers back onto pages.
  • Damp paper: Paper absorbs humidity. If stored in a basement or near a window, it can cause toner adhesion issues.
  1. Change the paper type in the driver to match what is loaded.
  2. Use fresh, dry paper from a sealed ream.
  3. If smudging persists, the fuser needs replacement. On most Brother models, the fuser is a user-replaceable part (search your model + "fuser unit").

Fix 7: Brother Inkjet Specifics (MFC-J and DCP-T Series)

Brother's inkjet line uses piezo print heads similar to Epson. The Inkvestment tank models (DCP-T) are particularly sensitive to air bubbles.

Ink Not Flowing from Tanks

  1. Make sure the ink tank cap is fully closed but not overtightened.
  2. Check the ink level window. If an tank looks empty, refill it with Brother genuine ink.
  3. Run Strong Cleaning from the printer panel: Settings > Maintenance > Strong Cleaning.
  4. If strong cleaning fails, use the Ink Flush function (uses a lot of ink but clears severe clogs).

"Cannot Detect Ink" Error

  1. Open the ink tank cover.
  2. Remove and reinsert the ink bottle nozzle.
  3. Make sure the rubber seal on the tank inlet is not pushed inside.
  4. If using third-party ink, Brother may reject it. Use Brother genuine ink for reliable detection.

Fix 8: Fix Brother Wireless Connection Issues

Brother printers use Wi-Fi Direct, infrastructure mode, or WPS. Connection drops are common after router changes.

Method A: WPS Push Button

  1. Press the WPS button on your router.
  2. Within 2 minutes, press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the Brother printer for 5 seconds.
  3. The Wi-Fi light will go solid when connected.

Method B: Brother iPrint&Scan App

  1. Download the Brother iPrint&Scan app on your phone.
  2. Make sure your phone is on the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band (Brother printers do not support 5 GHz on most models).
  3. Tap Add Printer and follow the wizard.
  4. The app sends network credentials directly to the printer.

Method C: Static IP Assignment

  1. Print a network config page: Menu > Machine Info > Print Settings.
  2. Note the IP address.
  3. In your router admin panel, assign a DHCP reservation to that MAC address.
  4. On your computer, add the printer by IP address instead of relying on discovery.

Fix 9: Scanning Problems on MFC Models

Brother MFC printers often scan fine from the glass but fail when using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

  • ADF picks up multiple sheets: Clean the ADF separation pad with a damp cloth. It wears smooth over time.
  • Scans have vertical lines: Clean the thin glass strip to the left of the main flatbed. A speck of dust here creates a line on every ADF scan.
  • Scan to PC fails: Reinstall Brother ControlCenter software. Windows updates often break the scan-to-PC service.

Fix 10: Update Firmware and Drivers

Brother releases firmware updates that fix Wi-Fi stability, scanning bugs, and toner measurement accuracy.

  1. Go to support.brother.com.
  2. Enter your model number.
  3. Download the Firmware Update Tool and the Full Driver & Software Package.
  4. Run the firmware update first (do not turn off the printer during the process).
  5. Install the full driver package and restart your computer.
