HP makes more printers than any other company on Earth, and their troubleshooting ecosystem is the most mature — but also the most fragmented. Whether you own a DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet, LaserJet, or PageWide, this guide gives you the exact fix sequence HP support would walk you through, without the hold music.

Know Your HP Printer Family

HP printers fall into distinct families, and the right fix depends on which one you own:

  • DeskJet / ENVY — Budget inkjet, cartridge-integrated print heads. Fixes focus on cartridges and drivers.
  • OfficeJet / OfficeJet Pro — Business inkjet with fixed print heads and large ink tanks. Fixes focus on head cleaning and network issues.
  • LaserJet — Laser toner printers. Fixes focus on toner cartridges, drum units, and fusers.
  • PageWide — Enterprise inkjet with a stationary page-wide print bar. Requires HP-specific tools.
  • Instant Ink models — Subscription ink service. Cartridges are locked to your account and cannot be bypassed easily.

Fix 1: Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)

HP offers a free diagnostic tool that automates most common fixes. It is surprisingly effective.

  1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP's support site.
  2. Run the tool and select your printer from the list.
  3. Click Fix Printing.
  4. The tool checks driver status, spooler health, connectivity, and cartridge state.
  5. If it finds issues, it will offer to fix them automatically. Click Apply Fix for each.
  6. After it finishes, click Test Print inside the tool.

If the tool says "Driver unavailable," move to Fix 6. If it says "Cartridge problem," move to Fix 2.

Fix 2: Inspect and Re-seat the Cartridges

HP thermal inkjet cartridges contain the print head built into the cartridge itself. A bad electrical connection or dried nozzle on the cartridge is the #1 cause of HP printers not printing.

  1. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  2. Press down on the cartridge to release it, then pull it out.
  3. Look at the copper-colored contacts and the plastic tape. Make sure the tape was removed during installation.
  4. Look at the bottom of the cartridge where the nozzles are. You should see a shiny strip with tiny holes. If it looks crusty or dull, the nozzles are clogged.
  5. Wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth. Do not touch the nozzles with your fingers — skin oils destroy them.
  6. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks.
  7. Close the door and wait for the alignment page prompt.

Fix 3: Clean the Cartridges via HP Smart

For cartridge-integrated heads (DeskJet, ENVY), cleaning is done at the cartridge level rather than the printer level.

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your computer or phone.
  2. Select your printer.
  3. Tap Printer Maintenance or the settings gear.
  4. Select Clean Cartridges or Clean Printheads.
  5. The printer will print a diagnostic page showing before and after nozzle patterns.
  6. If gaps remain, run the cleaning again. HP allows up to 2 back-to-back cleans before requiring a cooldown.

After cleaning, print our black-and-white test page to confirm crisp text and solid blacks.

Fix 4: Check Instant Ink Status

If you are on HP Instant Ink, the printer will refuse to print if:

  • Your subscription is paused or payment failed.
  • The cartridge is locked to a different printer or account.
  • You inserted a non-Instant Ink cartridge while enrolled.
  1. Go to instantink.hpconnected.com and log in.
  2. Check your account status. If it says "Paused," reactivate it.
  3. If you want to use non-Instant Ink cartridges, you must cancel the Instant Ink plan first. Simply removing the cartridges does not unlock the printer.

Fix 5: Clear Cartridge Protection Errors

HP printers with cartridge protection enabled reject third-party or refilled cartridges. You may see "Cartridge Problem," "Incompatible Cartridge," or "Used or Counterfeit Cartridge."

  1. On the printer's front panel, go to Setup > Preferences > Cartridge Protection.
  2. Select Disable or Off.
  3. Remove and reinsert the cartridge.
  4. If the error persists, the cartridge chip is dead. Replace it.

Note: Disabling cartridge protection is not available on all models. Some HP ENVY and DeskJet models from 2020+ permanently enforce chip validation.

Fix 6: Reinstall the HP Driver from Scratch

HP's universal print driver sometimes conflicts with older device-specific drivers. A clean reinstall fixes most software-related printing failures.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall HP Smart, HP Print and Scan Doctor, and any "HP [Model]" entries.
  2. Go to Printers & scanners, click your printer, and choose Remove.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Go to support.hp.com, enter your exact model number, and download the Full Feature Software and Driver package (not the Basic Driver).
  5. Run the installer. Do not connect the USB cable until prompted.
  6. After installation, the installer will offer to print a test page. Accept it.

Fix 7: Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

When software and cartridges are fine but the printer still refuses to print, a factory reset clears corrupted settings.

Touchscreen Models (OfficeJet Pro, PageWide)

  1. On the front panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  2. Confirm the reset. The printer will restart.
  3. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and re-add the printer on your computer.

Button-Only Models (DeskJet, ENVY)

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the other end from the wall.
  4. Wait 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall, then into the printer.
  6. Turn the printer on.

This is a "semi-full" reset that clears volatile memory. For a deeper reset, some models require holding the Resume and Wireless buttons while powering on.

Fix 8: LaserJet-Specific Checks

LaserJet printers use toner and drums, not ink. The failure modes are completely different.

  • Toner low: Shake the toner cartridge side-to-side to redistribute powder. If prints are still faded, replace the toner.
  • Drum unit worn: If you see repeating marks, lines, or gray background shading at exact intervals, the imaging drum is scratched. Replace the drum unit.
  • Fuser error: If pages come out smudged or toner rubs off, the fuser (the hot roller) has failed. This requires a technician or replacement printer.
  • Transfer roller dirty: Open the toner door and look for a black roller under where the toner sits. Wipe it gently with a dry cloth.

Fix 9: Fix Paper Feed Issues

HP printers sometimes report "not printing" when they actually cannot pull paper. The job sits in the queue indefinitely.

  1. Remove all paper from the tray.
  2. Fan the stack to separate sheets.
  3. Align the paper guides snugly against the edges — not too tight, not too loose.
  4. Do not overfill the tray. HP recommends filling to below the max-line indicator.
  5. Clean the pickup roller with a slightly damp cloth if it has dust buildup.

Fix 10: Update Printer Firmware

HP pushes firmware updates that fix bugs, improve Wi-Fi stability, and sometimes unlock new features. An outdated firmware can cause print failures after a Windows or macOS update.

  1. On touchscreen models: Setup > Printer Maintenance > Firmware Update.
  2. On button models: Use the HP Smart app. It will show a firmware badge if an update is available.
  3. Never turn the printer off during a firmware update — it can brick the device.

HP-Specific Error Codes Quick Reference

Error / CodeMeaningFix
E2 / E3 / E4Paper jam or carriage stallClear jam, remove obstructions, restart
E5Cartridge problemRe-seat or replace cartridge
E6Scanner failureRestart, check scanner cable

"Used Cartridge"Cartridge protection onDisable in settings or use OEM ink
"Driver Unavailable"Corrupted or missing driverFull driver reinstall (Fix 6)

Preventing HP Printer Problems

  • Use the printer weekly — even a single page prevents nozzle drying.
  • Leave it plugged in — HP printers run automatic maintenance cycles when idle. Unplugging stops this.
  • Store cartridges sealed — opened cartridges begin drying within days.
  • Update HP Smart — the app notifies you of firmware and driver updates before problems start.
  • Run our free test page monthly — the PrinterTools test page catches fading and alignment issues early.

Summary

For HP printers, always start with the HP Print and Scan Doctor. If that does not solve it, check cartridges, Instant Ink status, and cartridge protection. Reinstall the full driver package if software is suspect. For LaserJets, focus on toner and drum. Use the error code table above to skip straight to the right fix instead of guessing.
